President Robert Mugabe has implored schools to nurture all talent in students by giving them an opportunity to take up sporting activities.

Mugabe said this after crowning Kutama College the champions of the inaugural Robert G Mugabe Schools Soccer Tournament which ended this Monday evening at Kutama College in Zvimba.

It was a sporting event that attracted some 12 schools from Zvimba District and the country's first citizen, Robert Mugabe was present to witness the finality of the four day tournament.

Having watched schools showcasing their talent in a soccer final that ended with Kutama College winning 2-nil over their sister school, Kutama Day School, Mugabe called on school authorities to fully harness the potential talents abounding in school children by allowing them to take up sporting activities of their own choice.

"The idea of involving schools in sporting events is a very important one. It should not only be confined to boarding schools but should reach out to rural areas in search of talent that is abundant in those rural areas," said Mugabe.

He thanked the organisers for honouring him by naming the tournament after   him and re-emphasised government's commitment to promoting sporting activities.

Winners, Kutama College won US$10 000 while Kutama Day got US$5 000 as runners up with the other ten schools receiving US$1000 each.

All the 12 schools were also given stationary by the tournament sponsors, Cablemails, who sponsored the event to the tune of US$60 000.

The Robert Mugabe Schools Tournament is expected to grow from district to province and eventually into a national event.
